Smart thermostats

Hive, Nest or tado°: which smart thermostat suits your home?

We fit all three across Belfast and Greater Belfast. Each one puts your heating on your phone. The differences are in room-by-room control, how much it does for you, and cost. Here’s how they compare.

At a glance

Who each one suits

Hive

Best for

Most homes that want a simple, reliable app, with the option to add room-by-room control later.

Good to know

  • Hot water tank? The Heating and Hot Water version runs that too. Combi boilers take the heating-only version
  • Add Hive radiator valves one room at a time
  • The Hive Hub unlocks the full app: schedules, boosts and location-based control

Google Nest

Best for

People who’d rather not set schedules. The Learning Thermostat picks up your routine and builds one for you.

Good to know

  • A Heat Link is fitted at your boiler on mains power, a job for an installer
  • No Nest radiator valves, so no room-by-room control, but a zoned home can have one Nest per zone
  • Google isn’t launching new Nest thermostats in Europe. Current models are still sold while stock lasts and still get updates, and we’ll talk it through on the survey

tado°

Best for

Room-by-room control on every radiator, and homes using Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings.

Good to know

  • tado° smart radiator valves give each room its own schedule
  • Hot water tank? It needs the starter kit with hot water control, and we’ll tell you exactly which one to buy
  • Automatic away mode is part of tado°’s paid Auto-Assist subscription. Without it, the app sends a reminder instead

Three questions that usually decide it

  1. Do you want each room on its own schedule?

Go for Hive or tado°. Both make their own smart radiator valves. Nest doesn’t, though a zoned home can have one Nest thermostat per zone.

  2. Do you have a hot water cylinder?

All three can run your hot water, but only with the right kit: Hive’s Heating and Hot Water version, the Nest Learning Thermostat with its Heat Link, or tado°’s starter kit with hot water control. With a combi boiler there’s no hot water to schedule. We’ll tell you exactly which version to buy.

  3. Would you rather set it once and forget it?

Nest learns your routine for you. With Hive and tado° you set schedules in the app, and we set them up with you before we leave.

Got underfloor heating, or several zones to run? That’s a job for Heatmiser. See our thermostats for underfloor heating.

How it works

Three steps to a smarter, cosier home

  1. Free survey

We check your boiler, wiring and Wi-Fi, ask how you live, and recommend the system that suits your home, and exactly which kit to buy.

  2. Fit & set up

Neat, tidy installation, usually in a single visit. We connect everything to the app and set your schedules with you.

  3. We show you how

A proper walkthrough on your own phone before we leave, and we’re a call away if anything needs tweaking later.

Cost

What does it cost?

Fitting starts from £75, plus the cost of the thermostat itself. We don’t sell the equipment; we tell you exactly what to buy. The total depends on the brand, whether you add radiator valves, and how your boiler and wiring are set up. After the free survey you get a clear quote before any work starts, and we’ll recommend the system that fits, not the most expensive one.

FAQs

Smart thermostat questions

Can I add smart radiator valves later?

Yes, with Hive or tado°. Both make their own smart radiator valves, which replace the valves on your radiators. Start with the thermostat and add valves room by room whenever it suits you, on the same visit or later.

Will it work with my oil boiler?

Most oil boilers in Northern Ireland homes can take a Hive, Nest or tado° thermostat, as can gas combi and system boilers. We check your boiler and wiring on the free survey before you spend anything.

What happens if my Wi-Fi goes down?

Your heating carries on with its normal schedule. You just can’t change it from your phone until the internet is back.

How long does fitting take?

A straight thermostat swap is usually done in a single visit, including setting up the app and your schedules with you. Adding radiator valves in every room takes a little longer.
